Program Description
There have been recent attempts to expand the coverage of the Fair Housing Act, both Federal and State versions, against community associations. This will be an in-depth presentation of those issues with give and take from members of the audience.
Topics that will be discussed include the Fair Housing Act's prohibition on discrimination against individuals with disabilities relating to limited common element parking; the Fair Housing Act's prohibition against familial status discrimination in the area of adult swim and other activities; how do the "Design and Construction" elements of the statute impact an association's day-to-day operations and updating common elements as well as the ever-expanding definition of service animals.
Speakers
Andrew J. Terrell, Esq. represents condominium associations, homeowners associations, and real estate cooperatives in Virginia and the District of Columbia. He advises on collections and insurance and counsels community associations in the areas of covenant enforcement and governing documents interpretation.
Raymond J. Diaz, Esq. has 30 plus years of experience representing community associations in Virginia, the District of Columbia, and Maryland. He defends community association clients in employment matters, mechanic's liens; discrimination and fair housing claims, and federal telecommunications regulations. Mr. Diaz advises clients on the conduct of meetings and helps Association clients meet other document driven requirements, the review and updating of covenants, and architectural enforcement and addressing and resolving claims by owner against client associations.
Marla J. Diaz, Esq. focuses her practice on representation of community associations throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. She has significant trial and general litigation experience in the state and federal courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia, including litigating various community association issues, construction defect, commercial litigation, and real estate litigation. She also has significant experience representing community associations before various administrative boards, including the Virginia Fair Housing Board and various County Human Rights Commissions.
