Program Description
Join two California attorneys to learn about the First Amendment right to free speech and how such right may be restricted in community associations across the country. Under what circumstances can the right to free speech be curtailed? Where can and should the line be drawn? Hear the most prevalent scenarios where the right to free speech is being invoked, state and federal legislation surrounding the topic, and procedures and protocols boards can adopt to manage and address First Amendment issues.
Speakers:
- Brian D. Moreno, Esq.*, SwedelsonGottlieb, Los Angeles, CA; CCAL fellow, is a community association attorney with SwedelsonGottlieb. He has been practicing common interest development law in California since 2003. Licensed to practice law in both California and Arizona, Brian is an active member of the Community Associations Institute (CAI) in several Southern California chapters and has authored a number of articles pertaining to common interest development law and its application to community associations in California. Additionally, he has been a featured speaker at CAI events (including the National CAI Law Conference), as well as an approved instructor for various chapters in Southern California. In 2013, he was the 20th California attorney to be admitted to CAI’s College of Community Association Lawyers. He serves as co-chair of the Programs Committee for CAI’s Greater Los Angeles Chapter and serves on the National Law Seminar Planning Committee of CAI.
- Lisa A Tashjian, Esq., Beaumont Tashjian, Woodland Hills, CA; a partner with Beaumont Tashjian, has devoted her career to representing community associations. While she provides the firm’s clients with legal advice on all areas of community association law, she focuses her practice on litigation including dispute resolution, arbitration and trial work and supervises the firm’s attorney-managed assessment collections department. In addition to her practice, Ms. Tashjian is an active faculty member in various community association organizations, such as Community Associations Institute (CAI) and California Association of Community Managers (CACM). She is past President of the CAI-Channel Islands Chapter where she also served as the liaison for the group’s California Legislative Action Committee and is past President of the CAI-Greater Los Angeles Chapter (CAI-GLAC), and continues to serve on the Board for CAI-GLAC. Ms. Tashjian has also authored several articles published in each of the organization’s magazines.
